Staff quick guide: naming pupils and staying safe
For every teacher at . Pin it up or share it at a staff meeting.
Your school chooses how pupils are named
SchoolJewel does not need pupils’ full names. The name is only there so you can recognise each pupil. The platform works in exactly the same way whichever you choose. Our school’s choice:
| Option | When it suits |
|---|---|
| First name and surname initial (recommended) | Most classes. Alex M. and Alex T. are easy to tell apart, and the least personal data is held |
| First name only | Small classes where every first name is different |
| Class-based identifier (for example Puffin 7) | Maximum privacy. Keep your own list showing who is who |
| Full name | Only if your school has decided it is necessary. It is the school’s decision, not a requirement |
Never enter
- health, special educational needs, disability, ethnicity, religion, safeguarding or child protection information
- free school meal or pupil premium status
- dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, photographs or pupil numbers
- comments about a pupil’s behaviour, wellbeing or home life
Good habits
- Print login cards and give each pupil only their own. Keep spare cards locked away. Press New password if one is lost.
- Remove pupils when they leave. Do this at the end of each school year.
- Do not display individual totals on a wall, or link points to sanctions. Notice every pupil, including the quiet ones.
- Never share your own login. Log out on shared computers.
- If something looks wrong (the wrong pupil in your class, a pupil you do not recognise, a login card seen by others), tell straight away.
